2010 U.S. Open: Nadal, Federer Enter 3rd Round
Top seed Rafael Nadal showed on Friday why he is at the top of the world rankings, rallying from 1-5 down in the second-set tiebreaker en route to a 6-2, 7-6 (5), 7-5, straight-sets victory over Denis Istomin.
The victory gave Nadal a place in the third round, where he will face Gilles Simon of France. Meanwhile, Roger Federer remained on track for his sixth U.S. Open crown and a first-ever meeting with Nadal in the tournament after crushing Germany’s Andreas Beck on Thursday, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3. The Swiss ace will next take on Paul-Henri Mathieu.
In the women’s side, Venus Williams made fast work of qualifier Mandy Minella, 6-2, 6-1, to move into the fourth round. The American third seed will be joined in the next round by defending champion Kim Clijsters, who trounced 27th seed Petra Kvitova, 6-3, 6-0. Clijsters will face former world no.1 Ana Ivanovic in the fourth round. The Serbian, who is not seeded this year, defeated wild card Virginie Razzano, 7-5, 6-0, to reach the fourth round for only the second time.
