2012 ‘Evita’ Production Stars Ricky Martin
The musical Evita will be returning to Broadway in 2012 with Latin pop star Ricky Martin playing the role of Che Guevarra.
Producers made the announcement Wednesday, June 9. Starring in the title role is Elena Rogers, an actress from Argentina. Rogers made waves from playing the role during its revival in West End, London in 2006.
“I’ve never lost my love for the intimacy of the theater,” said Martin, 38, in a statement. The singer previously worked in the staging of Les Miserables in Broadway.
The musical by Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice first appeared in West End in 1978. Then it appeared in Broadway in 1979. It was made into a film in 1996 with Queen of Pop Madonna playing the lead.
Martin made headlines last March when he finally announced that he is gay. A former member of the band Menudo since 1984, he became a solo artist in 1990. He is now a father to twin boys, Matteo and Valentino.
