22 dead in stampede at Ivory Coast football match

At least 22 people died and 132 were injured on Sunday in a stampede at a stadium in the Ivory Coast during their World Cup qualifier against Malawi.

Reports indicated that part of a wall collapsed at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny arena in Abidjan, causing fans to panic.

“Spectators who did not buy tickets were jostling before the match,” sports minister Dagobert Banzio said. “They smashed one of the main gates of the stadium. They were trampled.”

About 50,000 fans watched the 5-0 win by Ivory Coast, whose team includes Arsenal defender Emmanuel Eboue and Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, who scored twice.

Hundreds of people have been killed in stadium accidents in Africa over the past few years.
