“40-Year-Old Virgin” Actor Guilty of Attempted Murder
Shelley Malil, an actor who appeared with Steve Carrell in the film “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” has been found guilty by San Diego County jurors of trying to kill his girlfriend in a violent fight in 2008.
Jurors found Malil, 45, guilty of attempted premeditated murder for stabbing his then-girlfriend, Kendra Beebe, more than 20 times. The fight, which occurred at her San Marcos home, followed an incident where Malil found Beebe on her patio with another man, the actor’s defense attorney Matthew Roberts said. Roberts, in trying to convince the jury, admitted that his client went too far in attacking Beebe, but said that Malil had no intention to kill his girlfriend.
However, the prosecution countered that the fact that Malil brought the knife he used to Beebe’s home shows that the actor had the intention to cause harm to his girlfriend.
Malil, who was acquitted of the charge of residential burglary, faces at least 16 years to a maximum of life in prison.
Beebe, who was inside the court when the verdict was read, said she felt relieved. “I feel a sense of relief, but I have to be honest there is never a win in a situation like this,” she said.
