700 dead in Nigeria clashes (video)
Hundreds of people including foreigners have died in days of clashes between government troops and members of a radical Islamic sect in Nigeria, a military official said Saturday.
Col. Ben Ahonotu, commander of the operation to combat Islamic militants, told reporters that about 700 people were killed in the northern city of Maiduguri. Previous reports said at least 300 rebels, soldiers and civilians had died throughout the region.
According to government officials, mass burials had to be carried out because dead bodies were decomposing in the heat.
Boko Haram, an Islamist sect, wants the government to impose strict Islamic Shariah law in the entire Muslim-dominated northern half of Nigeria.
On Wednesday, troops retaliated, killing about 100 people—half of them inside a mosque.
