Adam Sandler’s “Grown Ups” Opens Strong

Adam Sandler has proven that he still has what it takes to bring in the crowd, as “Grown Ups” pulled $14 million on its opening day on Friday. The strong opening puts “Grown Ups,” which also stars Chris Rock, Kevin James, and Salma Hayek, among others, on track for a $40-million weekend.

However, “Grown Ups” might not be able to stop “Toy Story 3” from topping the box office for the second-straight week. The third installment of the adventures of Woody the cowboy and Buzz Light Year the space robot took $18 million on Friday to keep it on target for another strong box-office weekend. “Toy Story 3” topped the weekend box office last week with $110 million and has so far collected more than $180 million in eight days. The Pixar animated film is expected to cross the $200-million mark by the weekend.

Meanwhile, the combined star power of Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz failed to lift “Knight and Day” to the top as the action-comedy flick could only accumulate an estimated $13.6 million since opening on Wednesday.
