AFF Suzuki Cup 2010: Indonesia beats Philippines on ‘El Loco’ header
Uruguay-born striker Cristian ‘El Loco’ Gonzales scored in the first half to lift Indonesia to 1-0 victory against the Philippines in the first leg of the Suzuki Cup semifinals Thursday night at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta.
Gonzales, the first naturalized player to be called up to the Indonesian national football squad, converted a header in the 31st minute, sending hordes of hometown fans to an utter frenzy. With the victory, the Reds and Whites extended their record to 16 wins in 17 international competitions.
It was the first time the Philippines lost a game in this year’s tournament, but the Azkals still have the chance to redeem themselves on Sunday (Dec. 19) for the second leg of the semis. The winner will face either Malaysia or defending champion Vietnam in the two-legged finals starting December 26.
