Suzuki Cup 2010 Live Stream: The Philippine national football team takes on Indonesia in the two-legged semi-final of the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup beginning on Thursday (December 16) at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta. The Azkals, though considered as the weakest squad in the competition, secured a Final 4 seat for the first time in the 16-year history of Southeast Asia’s biennial football championship.
At the start of group stage play, the Filipinos held Singapore to a 1-1 draw, then humbled defending champion Vietnam 2-0 before the eyes of 40,000 Vietnamese fans. Simon McMenemy’s side, led by Fulham netkeeper Neil Etheridge, was held to a goalless stalemate by Myanmar on December 8 but clinched a seat in the semifinals because they finished second in their group. The match on Thursday is officially the Philippines’ home game but the country lacks a stadium that suits international standards so they will lose their chance to play in front of the home crowd. The second match is set on December 19 and will also be held in the Indonesian capital. Vietnam and Malaysia will meet at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium Wednesday night, while the return fixture is on Saturday at My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi.
Indonesia, which topped Group A with three wins, will now enjoy a huge support from an expected crowd of more than 80,000 at the Bung Karno Stadium. But despite the Reds and Whites’ good run in the group stage, the players are also aware that they must not take their opponents lightly. Philippines coach McMemeny, meanwhile, said he will stick to the same game plan and strategy that has surprisingly brought them this far.
Will the Philippines’ football fairy tale continue? We think so. But regardless of the outcome of their semifinal clash against Alfred Riedl’s side, the campaign of the Azkals can already be considered a success.
UPDATE: Cristian Gonzales scored in the first half to lift Indonesia to 1-0 victory against the Philippines in the first leg of the Suzuki Cup semifinals. The Azkals, however, still have the chance to redeem themselves from the defeat in the second leg set on Sunday. COMPLETE STORY HERE.
