Afghan President’s Half-Brother Killed
Afghan President Hamid Karzai‘s half-brother was killed on Tuesday in his home in the restive and Taliban-infested province of Kandahar.
President Karzai confirmed the death of Ahmed Wali Karzai, who served as head of the Kandahar Provincial Council since 2005. “My younger brother was martyred in his house today,” President Karzai said in a press conference. “This is the life of all Afghan people. I hope these miseries which every Afghan family faces will one day end.”
Reports said Ahmed Wali Karzai, a significant player in bringing a semblance of stability in Kandahar, was killed by his own bodyguard. Kandahar Gov. Tooryalai Wesa said the assassin, Sardar Mohammad, was known to be a part of Ahmed Wali Karzai’s inner circle. The Taliban, whose birthplace is Kandahar, took responsibility for the assassination, although the militant group’s claim could not be verified. Security has been tightened in Kandahar, with road blocks and check points positioned all over the province in the hopes of capturing any person who may have had a hand in the assassination.
