African Cup of Nations: Angola vs. Algeria
The Black Antelopes of Angola go into tonight’s crucial Group A encounter against Algeria safe in the knowledge that a stalemate will be enough to see them advance to the African Cup of Nations quarterfinals.
But speaking at the press on the eve of the match, Angola’s Portuguese coach Manuel Jose said his players will have to play hard as they need to win for an utter qualification.
“They don’t have individual stars but (Algeria) command a good unit of players,” Jose said. “We saw how they bounced back against Mali after a shock 3-0 defeat by Malawi.”
The Palancas Negras missed their chance of taking charge of the group on the opening day of the tournament when they let slip a 4-0 lead to allow Mali get away with a draw.
The Desert Foxes of Algeria, on the other hand, must win today if they are to qualify without relying on the result of the Malawi vs. Mali contest.
The match kicks-off at 11:00 a.m. ET (17:00 CET).
UPDATE: Algeria and Angola both advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament as their goalless draw in Luanda eliminated Mali despite its 3-1 victory over Malawi.
