African Cup of Nations: Ivory Coast vs. Burkina Faso

Ivory Coast vs. Burkina Faso: Chelsea striker Didier Drogba will captain the Ivory Coast against Burkina Faso this afternoon in a group-opening match at the 2010 African Cup of Nations at Chimandela Stadium in Cabinda.

The Elephants have played 68 games in 17 ANC appearances, but it will be the first time they face Burkina, whose best showing was fourth place under Philippe Troussier in 1998.

While Togo is withdrawing from the competition in the wake of Friday’s ambush in Angola, organizers have said the ANC finals will push through.

Up to three people are reported to have died and several others were hurt when gunmen opened fire on the Sparrow Hawks’ team bus.

Group B now has three teams competing for two spots in the quarterfinals after Togo pulled out.

The Stallions know they will face big teams in this year’s ANC, but this worries them not. If they could beat more experienced squads during the qualifiers, then there is enough confidence for them to compete in this tournament.

The match kicks-off at 11:00 a.m. ET (17:00 CET).

UPDATE: Tournament favorites Ivory Coast were held to a 0-0 draw by Burkina Faso in Monday’s only African Nations Cup Group B game. It means Drogba and the gang may now need a victory against Ghana if they are to progress past the group stages.
