African Cup of Nations: Nigeria vs. Benin

The Super Eagles of Nigeria take on Benin this afternoon with Joseph Yobo and his teammates under great pressure to stay in the African Nations Cup following a 3-1 defeat to Egypt in their opener.

The Group C loss against the Pharaohs was one the most shameful defeats for the team in over a decade.

“No one is happy about the result, and we are looking forward to giving our all in the next games,” Yobo said.

A failure today would put Shaibu Amodu’s side out of the tournament so there’s no room for mistakes versus their neighbors. There are rumors in the press that coach Amodu will be fired if the Eagles do not get the result they want against Benin.

These two teams have met three times before in the group stage of the ANC, with Nigeria triumphant on each occasion. The Squirrels are led up front by striker Razak Omotoyossi, one of three Nigerian-born players in the squad.

The match kicks-off at 11:00 a.m. ET (17:00 CET).
