American Idol 8 Salt Lake City Auditions (RECAP)
Some really solid talent in Salt Lake City for this turn of American Idol season 8 auditions, didn’t ya think? Well, Utah is the home of of last year’s runner up David Archuleta… and one of the most religiously homogeneous states in America.
Let me give you a recap.
First up was a member of the city’s most celebrated family – the Osmonds. David Osmond is the fourth son of Alan and Suzanne Osmond. Alan is the eldest brother of the original Osmond family of singers that includes Donny & Marie.
David sang “Something Within Me” By boy group Take Six. His voice didn’t have enough intensity but it wasn’t that bad either. Paula told him he should choose a song by a solo artist. He’s got the golden ticket nevertheless. He’s going to Hollywood!
Next was Tara Mathews who was introduced at the beginning of the show as “Salt Lake City’s only goth.” She told the judges that she has E.S.P. and knows when certain people will die. How creepy is that?! She did a version of “One Day I’ll Fly Away” from Moulin Rouge. Simon told her she sounded like a baby. It was a big “NO”.
Aleesha Turner – No.
Katie Sullivan – No.
Rich Kagel, – No.
Chris Kirkham, brought Greg the Rabbit (Grabbit) along to support him for good luck. The gimmick got him in, but no Hollywood ticket. The Rabbit lifted Simon in the air before they go.
In the audition room, Frankie Jordan, a single mom, did a cool rendition of Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good”. She’s really talented. The judges all voted yes very quickly.
Megan Corkrey sang “Can’t Help Lovin That Man of Mine” and she has a very unique voice. She was off to Hollywood. Simon said he loved her performance and she is one of the few he will remember.
Andrew Gibson said he has some soul in his voice. No way!
17 year old Austin Sisneros entered the room and sang When I Look To The Sky by Train. Randy Jackson said that he thought it was okay, but the song choice was terrible. They gave him another shot. He picked “It Takes a Village” and they gave him a golden ticket. There was nothing special about him. Don’t expect to see him get beyond Hollywood.
There was a weird montage of teary-eyed auditioners which led to Jarrett Burns doing a great rendition of “Girl Put Your Records On”. The judges gave him a yes.
Then a beautiful Haiwian beauty stepped into the audition room. 16 year old Taylor Vaifanua came out and sang, Joyful Joyful. Taylor got an immediate Jordin Sparks comparison from Randy. Everyone voted yes.
Last up was Rose Flack. She sang “I Feel the Earth Move”. The judges like her but didn’t love her song choice. Paula said that she has a cute face, but needs to work on her vocals. Rose got the yes to Hollywood!
