iPhone Worm Creator Hired as iPhone Applications Developer
From hacker programmer to legal applications developer.
Australian Ashley Towns, known for releasing the first worm for the Apple iPhone, was hired by Australian iPhone applications developer Mogeneration.
A lot of people, especially security experts, do not approve the decision. Many believe that this is giving praise to Towns instead of punishing him. Others think that there are many coders out there who are probably more deserving, and more straight, to work in the company.
Mogeneration is standing firm in its employment decision. Towns went through the process of interview, iPhone developer tests and assessments like any other applicants did and concluded that “he passed with flying colours.”
Towns developed the “ikee” worm, which resets the phone’s wallpaper to a picture of singer Rick Astley. His program was the basis used by a second but malicious worm named “duh” which was designed to steal online banking data. Both worms targeted only units that were “jailbroken” – modified iPhones that run non-Apple-approved apps.
