Archie Comics Welcomes its First Gay Character
Long time popular comic series Archie will have an additional character added to its cast come September this year. His name is Kevin Keller. He is described to be a hunky dude – and totally gay.
Kevin will be first appearing in Veronica comics issue number 202 with a storyline where Veronica “Ron/Ronnie” Lodge, the rich girl of Riverdale cannot understand why none of her charms would work on the new guy. Keller will have an appetite similar to that of Forsythe Pendleton “Jughead” Jones.
“The introduction of Kevin is just about keeping the world of Archie Comics current and inclusive. Archie’s hometown of Riverdale has always been a safe world for everyone. It just makes sense to have an openly gay character in Archie comic books,” said Archie Comics co-founder Jon Goldwater during the announcement.
The series was first issued in the winter of 1942.
The main characters in the series are Veronica, Jughead, Elizabeth “Betty’ Cooper, Reginald “Reggie” Mantle III and Archibald “Archie” Andrews.
