Carling Cup: Arsenal vs. Liverpool
The Emirates will be the site of tonight’s Carling Cup (League Cup) clash between Arsenal and Liverpool.
The last time that these two clubs met in this tournament at the quarterfinal stage, the game ended in a 6-3 victory for the Gunners. But having beaten Manchester United over the weekend, the Reds will be ready to fight to throw Arsene Wenger’s side out of the tournament.
The French tactician has stated that he will combine experience with youth, while Rafa Benitez has admitted that he will leave his star players on the sidelines.
Steven Gerrard won’t be dressed for this fixture, nor will Fernando Torres, Martin Kelly or Albert Riera. However, former AS Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani could make his debut tonight after being out injured since he joined Liverpool in the summer.
The Carling Cup is seen by several big clubs as a lower priority than other tournaments. Many of the top English sides have used the competition to give young players valuable big-game experience.
The match kicks-off at 19:45 GMT (3:45 pm ET).
UPDATE: The Gunners moved into the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup with a 2-1 victory over Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium.
