Art Clokey: Creator of Gumby Dies at 89
Art Clokey, creator of stop-motion clay figure Gumby has died. He was 88.
Arthur “Art” Clokey has died in his sleep at his Los Osos, California home Friday. Clokey battled with repeated bladder infection according to his son Joseph.
Art together with his wife, Ruth, created Gumby in the early 1950s. As a student in USC, Clokey made a film titled Gumbasia, a parody of Disney’s famous Fantasia. Gumbasia (1955) was then featured on the “Howdy Doody Show”, which later became Art Clokey’s The Gumby Show (1957).
Clokey is also credited with the bizarre clay-animation title sequence for the beach movie Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine (1965), starring Vincent Price and Frankie Avalon.
