Australian Open 2011: Federer Bows Out
The dream Australian Open final between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer that everyone was expecting is not happening with neither of the two making it past the semifinals.
A day after a visibly hurt Nadal lost his quarterfinal match to David Ferrer, Federer also bowed out against third seed Novak Djokovic in their semifinal battle on Thursday. Djokovic, who also defeated Federer the last time they met in a Grand Slam at the U.S. Open, did not allow the Swiss ace to win a single set en route to the 7-6, 7-5, 6-4, victory. Federer’s loss means that neither he nor Nadal will be in a Grand Slam final for the first time since the 2008 Australian Open, which, ironically, was won by Djokovic.
Djokovic, who will face the winner between Ferrer and Andy Murray in the other semifinal, said his win against Federer was “one of the best matches” he has played in a while.
Meanwhile, Chinese star Li Na became the first person from her country to reach a Grand Slam final when she defeated world no.1 Caroline Wozniacki, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, in their semifinal showdown also Thursday. Li will face former world no.1 Kim Clijsters in the final. Clijsters, the reigning U.S. Open champ, defeated Vera Zvonareva, 6-3, 6-3.
