Australian Open Results: Li Na ousts Venus Williams to reach semis
China’s Li Na pulled off a major upset on Wednesday with a 2-6 7-6 (7/4) 7-5 victory over Venus Williams to reach the semi-finals of the 2010 Australian Open.
Li joins compatriot Zheng Jie in the final four— a first for Chinese women— and will face world number one Serena Williams or seventh seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus for a spot in the final.
The Chinese 16th seed was down 5–3 in the second set but battled back to take the match, ensuring that there will be no Williams family face-off at Melbourne Park this year.
The match featured a combined 110 unforced errors, Venus committing 53 of those. She had 11 double-faults — five in the third set — against Li’s five in the match.
Zheng plays former No. 1-ranked Justine Henin in the other half of the draw. Both those matches will be played on Rod Laver Arena tomorrow.
