Australian Open Results: Serena Williams pulls off miracle comeback against Victoria Azarenka
Top seed Serena Williams advanced to the 2010 Australian Open semi-finals after a dramatic comeback against seventh seed Victoria Azarenka.
While older sister Venus was defeated by China’s Li Na in her quarter-final, the defending champion fought back to overcome the Belarussian 4-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 in the next match at Rod Laver Arena.
Serena could hardly believe the result herself and admitted she thought the game was over. She fired down 17 aces and recorded 57 winners as she grew in confidence as the match went on.
Williams said: “I was actually thinking ‘If I lose today and I lose in doubles I think I can catch a flight on Friday’. That’s not what a champion is supposed to think, but that’s what I was thinking.”
It was the third year in a row that the American had ended Azarenka’s Australian Open and the second time in succession she has done it after being a set down.
