Australian Open Semifinals: Serena Williams vs. Li Na
The stage is all set for the 2010 Australian Open semi-final clash between defending champion Serena Williams and China’s Li Na.
The 27-year-old from Hubei province made sure that there will be no Williams family face-off at Melbourne Park this year by pulling off a major upset on Wednesday with a 2-6 7-6 (7/4) 7-5 win over Venus Williams.
The Chinese 16th seed was down 5–3 in the second set but battled back to take the match, which featured a combined 110 unforced errors.
Serena, on the other hand, advanced to the semis after a remarkable comeback against Belarusian seventh seed Victoria Azarenka.
The American could hardly believe the result herself and admitted she thought the game was over. She fired down 17 aces and recorded 57 winners as she grew in confidence as the match went on.
The game starts at 1:30 p.m. local time.
UPDATE: Serena Williams advanced to her fifth Australian Open final after defeating China’s Li Na 7-6 (4), 7-6 (1). The defending champion will face former world No.1 Justine Henin of Belgium in the Jan. 30 championship match.
