Authorities charge Terry Sedlacek in church shooting

A man has been charged with murder in the shooting of a pastor at a church in Illinois.

According to the Belleville News Democrat, Terry J. Sedlacek, 27, was charged with first degree murder and aggravated battery by Madison County prosecutors.

He was charged with the murder of Rev. Fred Winters on Sunday morning at the First Baptist Church in Maryville. The battery charges were for stabbing two parishioners who tried to stop him.

Sedlacek walked into a service at the church, exchanged words with the pastor, and then shot him with a .45 caliber handgun. The semi-automatic pistol then jammed, and the gunman pulled out a knife and stabbed himself. Two men tackled him and were stabbed in the process, the state police said.

Winters was pronounced dead on arrival in a nearby hospital of a gunshot wound to the chest.
