Batista wants kidney back from ex-wife
Divorces can get vicious. But one Long Island couple is getting creative with their post-marital combat: they’re fighting over a kidney!
A renowned New York surgeon who donated his kidney to his wife now wants it back after she cheated on him and filed for divorce.
Dr. Richard Batista, 49, held a news conference at his lawyer’s office Wednesday to publicly talk about his demand.
The Long Island doctor wants her ex-wife to pay $1.5 million for the organ he gave her as a gift eight years ago.
“I saved her life and then to be betrayed like this is unfathomable. It’s incomprehensible,” said Batista in the New York Post.
The pair met twenty years ago while he was a resident and she a training nurse. They fell in love and tied the knot in 1990, and had three kids. But the marriage slowly began to fall apart.
He said his wife, Dawnell Batista, started to have an affair with a physical therapist she met in 2003 while recovering from an injury she suffered during karate lessons.
“She engaged in an extramarital affair and refused to go to marital counseling and reconciliation,” he added.
A medical specialist estimated the value of the kidney for the legal team. They are asking for the $1.5 million as part of the distribution of assets in the divorce.
“In theory, we are asking for the return of the kidney. Of course he wouldn’t really ask for that but the value of it,” Dominic Barbara, a lawyer for Batista was quoted as saying.
