Batteries that can generate energy by shaking
Brother Industries, a company you may know for its printers, has developed batteries that could be recharged by shaking them or the device in which they are placed.
Called the Vibration-powered Generating Battery, it contains an electromagnetic induction generator and an electric double layer capacitor. Unfortunately, these batteries can only produce around 100mW of power (perfect for TV remotes) but are great replacements for traditional AAs and AAAs, which turn into pollutants after they are discarded in the waste.
You can’t buy these in the shops yet, but Brother will feature them at the Techno-frontier 2010, an exhibit that will run from July 21 to 23 in Tokyo.
