‘Beautiful Day’ Cover by Lee DeWyze Debuts at Number 24

Lee-DeWyze-Beautiful-Day-singleThe coronation song of the newest American Idol winner landed at the number 24 spot in Billboard 100.

Beautiful Day by Lee DeWyze was the highest new entry at the chart this week. He has three other singles in the chart namely Hallelujah which is at 44 and The Boxer which is at 88. His duet with his runner-up Crystal Bowersox Falling Slowly ranked at number 66. Meanwhile, Bowersox’s would have been coronation song, Up to the Mountain, is at 57.

If Beautiful Day doesn’t climb the chart, it will be the lowest-charting debut by an American Idol champion. Jordin Sparks and Kris Allen are so far the only winners to have failed to enter the top 10 for debut singles.

The coronation song sold around 100,000 copies, about 25% less than its predecessor, No Boundaries.

DeWyze made the following comment with an interview with MTV for this latest development: “You can’t complain about that, regardless of what it is. But this is the first season that we did a cover song for the finale, and that’s obviously different from past seasons, whatever part that has to do with it. … There [were] things presented, and, you know, that was the right song for the moment, I felt. And I’m glad I did it.”
