Boxer Edwin Valero Commits Suicide
The guilt of killing his own wife was just too much for Venezuelan boxer Edwin Valero. The troubled boxer was found barely alive inside a jail cell where he was brought after being arrested for admitting to killing his 24-year-old wife on Sunday. Police officers at the jail in Carabobo state tried to save Valero, who apparently committed suicide, but he eventually died.
Earlier on Sunday, Valero was arrested after leaving a hotel where the body of Jennifer Viera was found. Valero allegedly admitted to a hotel security that he killed his wife. He was detained at the jail, as officers prepared the formal charges. An inmate found Valero hanging from a bar inside his cell. Police said he used his own clothes to hang himself.
Valero was a crowd-pleaser throughout his short career. He made history when he won his first 18 fights via first-round knockout. He last fought on February 6 this year, forcing Antonio DeMarco to retire in the 9th round of their 12-round match for the WBC lightweight title. Valero held the WBA super-featherweight belt before moving up to lightweight.
