Boxing: Amir Khan vs. Paulie Malignaggi (UPDATED)
Khan vs. Malignaggi: WBA Light-welterweight champion Amir “King” Khan will face challenger Paul “Magic Man” Malignaggi tonight (9:45 p.m. ET) at New York´s fabled Madison Square Garden and expect the match to be filled with tension as things escalated between the two highly-confident prizefighters at Friday night’s weigh-in.
Khan, a 2004 silver medalist at the Athens Olympic Games, and Malignaggi, a former IBF junior welterweight champion, nearly came to blows when tension between the boxers and their entourages sparked an outbreak of pushing and arguing that security personnel had to break up.
“The Pride of Bolton” has vowed a knockout victory similar to his win against Dmitry Salita, whom he defeated in one round in December last year.
“I can’t wait to beat him because Paulie needs shutting up,” said Khan during a recent press conference promoting the fight. “I’m going to let my fists do my talking.”
Khan has the edge here and in terms of the boxers he’s faced and his results, there’s no doubt he is the favorite to win the match. But Freddie Roach, his trainer, has warned the 23-year-old Briton against complacency when he makes the second defense of his title.
“Salita was more one dimensional but Paulie brings a different style to the table, he’s unpredictable and awkward so we have a couple of plans to try and nullify that,” Roach said.
Who do you think will win? The Amir Khan vs. Paul Malignaggi fight will be televised live on HBO’s Boxing After Dark in the U.S. beginning at 9:45 pm ET.
UPDATE: Referee Steve Smoger stopped the fight at 1:25 of the 11th round, giving Amir Khan a TKO win against Paulie Malignaggi to retain his WBA Light-welterweight.
Amir Khan won’t be leaving the 140-pound category anytime soon. “I’m not going to leave the 140 pound division until I unify the titles,” he said.
