Brian Cushing Still Top Defensive Rookie

Disgraced NFL linebacker Brian Cushing got some good news for a change after several days of bad publicity when a media panel decided to maintain its choice of the 23-year-old as last season’s Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Cushing of the Houston Texans received 18 votes from the media panel in a revote, beating Buffalo Bills safety Jairus Byrd’s 13 and Green Bay Packers’ Clay Matthews III, who was the choice of 10 members. Cushing had received 39 votes when the panel originally voted in January.

The revote was conducted after it was reported last week that Cushing failed a drug test that was conducted in September last year. Cushing was found to have used a drug containing hCG, which is banned by the NFL as it is usually found in people who have been using steroid.

Cushing is suspended for the first four games of the 2010 NFL season as punishment for using the performance-enhancing drug.
