Bristol Palin, Levi Johnston Engaged

Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston are getting married. Palin and Johnston, who a few months ago had a bitter fight for the custody of their 18-month old son, said in an interview with Us Weekly that they got engaged a couple of weeks ago.

Bristol, the daughter of former Alaska governor and vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, said her relationship with Johnston was revived three weeks ago while they were in the process of working out a custody arrangement for their son, Tripp. “When he left that night, we didn’t hug or kiss, but I was thinking how different it was. He texted me: ‘I miss you. I love you. I want to be with you again’ … I was in shock,” she said.

Bristol said in the magazine interview that her mother is still in the dark about the recent development in her love life. “It is intimidating and scary just to think about what her reaction is going to be. Hopefully she will jump on board.”

Prior to the announcement, Johnston had apologized to his soon-to-be mother in-law for the word war that ensued between them last fall. Johnston had accused Sarah of calling her infant son Trig “retarded.” Trig has Down syndrome. That accusation earned Johnston a flurry of biting comments from Palin, who criticized her grandchild’s father for posing for “Playgirl.”

Short of directly giving their blessings to the reconciled couple, Palin and her husband Todd said in a statement on Wednesday that they “want what’s best” for their children, adding that “Bristol believes in redemption and forgiveness to a degree most of us struggle to put in practice in our daily lives.”
