A bus carrying Togo’s national football squad, including Premier League striker Emmanuel Adebayor, has been attacked by unknown gunmen as it traveled to the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Angola.

Two players, goalkeeper Kodjovi Obilale and defender Serge Akakpo, are reported to be injured and a Togolese sports ministry representative said that the bus driver had been killed. According to local media, two team doctors and a journalist traveling with the squad had also been hurt.

It is unknown what prompted the attack, but initial reports suggest that the gunmen were merely robbers who weren’t aware the vehicle was carrying a football team.

Manchester City’s Adebayor and Aston Villa’s Moustapha Salifou both escaped uninjured. Chelsea – who has four players at the competition– said it was confident that every necessary precaution would be taken by the organizers.

The Sparrow Hawks are in the country ahead of the tournament which starts on Sunday. Their first game is scheduled for Monday against Ghana in the northern territory of Cabinda, where a separatist group has waged a three-decade long war against the government.
