Cannes best director Dante Mendoza arrives home

Filipino filmmaker Brillante “Dante” Mendoza returned to the country Tuesday afternoon, a day after he shocked the world by winning the much-coveted Best Director award at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival in France.

Unlike other celebrities, such as Filipino boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao, not a single airport official met Mendoza, who bagged the Prix de la Mise en Scene for his movie Kinatay (Butchered).

Although Mendoza’s film split the critics (some called the movie “unwatchable” because of gory scenes), he was able to beat Oscar bigwigs like Ang Lee, Pedro Almodovar, Jane Campion, Lars von Trier, and Quentin Tarantino.

This is the first time that a Filipino had won in Cannes.
