Carling Cup: Manchester United 2-0 Tottenham Hotspur

The Red Devils and the Spurs will fight for a place in the semifinals of the Carling Cup tonight (20:00 GMT) in a re-run of last year’s final at Wembley.

Tottenham lost a dramatic penalty shootout to United last season but have since made great strides under Harry Redknapp.

The North Londoners go into the match high on confidence after their 9-1 thrashing of Wigan Athletic was followed by another positive performance at Aston Villa on Saturday.

However, some of Tottenham’s younger stars may not have even been born the last time the Lilywhites tasted victory at Old Trafford.

Redknapp is expected to make some changes to the starting line-up but wholesale adjustments look out of the question. Robbie Keane and Jermaine Jenas could start, while Ledley King, Jonathan Woodgate and Luka Modric are still sidelined by injury.

Federico Macheda and Danny Welbeck could once again start upfront for United, although Michael Owen is competing for a starting spot. Rafael is also in line to start at right back, giving Gary Neville a needed rest.

The Red Devils are still without Rio Ferdinand who is not expected to return until Christmas due to his relentless injury.

UPDATE: Darron Gibson scored two brilliant first half strikes to secure United’s place in the semifinals.
