Cats getting high on catnip (video)

Catnip is a perennial herb native to Europe, Asia and Africa but is now common in the U.S. and Canada. It is like a drug for cats—a cross between cannabis and cocaine.

When cats smell the plant, they exhibit a range of behaviors. This psychosexual reaction lasts for 5-15 minutes and cannot be evoked again for an hour or more after exposure.

According to studies, catnip also contains health benefits for humans. The leaves of the herb are often made into a tea which is used to treat common ailments such as fever, diarrhea and menstrual cramps.
