UEFA Champions League: Arsenal vs. Celtic
The Gunners host Celtic in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League qualifier tie at the Emirates Stadium this evening.
Last week, Arsenal scored two lucky goals at Parkhead to beat the Hoops 2-0. William Gallas accidentally deflected home a 30-yard free kick by Cesc Fabregas in the 43rd minute while Gary Caldwell turned a cross from Arsenal fullback Gael Clichy past his own goalkeeper in the 71st.
With that victory, they will now be confident of eliminating Celtic. However, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has stressed to his team there is still a lot of work to do.
The Frenchman branded tonight’s clash “bigger by far” than Saturday’s league trip to Old Trafford. In a recent interview he said: “If we drop points against Manchester United, you can always get them back. We still have 35 games to go. But lose this one and we are zeroes. There is no way back.”
Arsenal will be missing captain Cesc Fabregas due to the hamstring injury he picked up against Portsmouth last Saturday. If the Hoops can overcome Arsenal to reach the group stage, it would be one of the greatest results in the club’s history.
Game time is 7:45 p.m. London (2:45 p.m. ET).
UPDATE: The Gunners completed the formality of qualifying for the Champions League group stages with a comfortable 3-1 victory against Celtic at the Emirates Stadium and 5-1 on aggregate.
