UEFA Champions League: Celtic vs. Arsenal

Arsenal will face Celtic at Parkhead tonight in the first leg of the Champions League play-off with the winner reaching the group stage.

Celtic striker Scott McDonald insists his team must thump an early blow against the Gunners to stand any chance of advancing to the next round. The Scottish heavyweights lost only one game on home in the European Cup in three years. That is the match against Barcelona, but they played superbly and scored two goals.

This will be Tony Mowbray’s first taste of a really big European night. On the other hand, Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger has spent more than a decade of trying to win football’s ultimate club prize.

The Gunners, however, will enter the clash without striker Theo Walcott, who is injured. Stephen McManus will miss out for the Hoops, but Gary Caldwell will return after missing the league opener against Aberdeen F.C. through suspension.

The match kicks-off at 7:45 p.m. (2:45 p.m. ET).

UPDATE: Arsenal scored two lucky goals to beat the Hoops 2-0 in the first leg of their Champions League play-off.

William Gallas accidentally deflected home a 30-yard free kick by Cesc Fabregas in the 43rd minute while Gary Caldwell turned a cross from Arsenal fullback Gael Clichy past his own goalkeeper in the 71st.
