UEFA Champions League: Liverpool vs. Fiorentina
Liverpool takes on Fiorentina in the UEFA Champions League tonight looking for its seventh straight win in all competitions, and victory at the Artemio Franchi would leave the EPL side well-placed to reach the next round.
The Reds posted a 1-0 victory at Inter Milan in its last visit to Italy in 2008.
Rafa Benitez goes into the clash without Argentine star Javier Mascherano who suffered a hamstring injury in training. However, the Liverpool boss is confident of the midfielder’s recovery.
Fiorentina beat Everton 2-0 in their last meeting with an English club in the UEFA Cup round of 16 in the 2007-08 season. They are currently fourth in Serie A – just two points adrift of Sampdoria – and have won all three of their league games at home.
Alberto Gilardino, the Viola’s top scorer, is suspended so they go with Stevan Jovetic and Adrian Mutu up front tonight.
The match kicks-off at 8:45 p.m. (2:45 p.m. ET).
UPDATE: Teen sensation Stevan Jovetic scored twice to help Fiorentina sweep aside the Reds 2-0 and earn their first points in Group E.
