UEFA Champions League: Real Madrid vs. FC Zurich
Super League winners FC Zurich make their UEFA Champions League debut tonight against Spanish giants Real Madrid—the team that prevented them becoming the only Swiss side to reach the European final more than 45 years ago.
The Spaniards are heavy favorites in this clash. They were eliminated last season following a 5-0 aggregate loss to EPL side Liverpool but an amazing summer in the transfer market makes them a much more formidable proposition, with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Xabi Alonso and Kaka arriving at the Bernabeu.
The nine-time European champ has certainly enjoyed an instant return since investing $360 million in the offseason on players.
Zurich booked their place in the group stages with victory over Latvian champions FK Ventspils. In a recent interview, coach Bernard Challandes said his team must stick to their own game plan against Real if they are to get anything from their Group C opener.
Game time is 8:45 p.m. CET (2:45 p.m. ET).
UPDATE: Cristiano Ronaldo, the world’s most expensive player, scored twice from long-range free-kicks as Real Madrid beat FC Zurich 5-2. Raul Gonzalez and Gonzalo Higuain added further first-half goals to put Los Blancos in the box-seat.
