US striker Charlie Davies escapes fatal car accident
Sochaux striker Charlie Davies, who on Saturday helped the U.S. to qualify for the 2010 World Cup with a 3-2 victory over Honduras, underwent surgery Tuesday after being injured in a single-car crash in the Washington, D.C. area.
The 23-year-old was in a stable condition, said U.S. soccer spokesman Neil Buethe, adding that a woman inside the car was killed.
It was unclear what injuries Davies had suffered or whether or not they might jeopardize his career.
The U.S. men’s national soccer team was in town to play a World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica Wednesday night at RFK Stadium.
Davies, who plays as a forward for French Ligue 1 side Sochaux, has four goals in 17 caps, and was also a member of last year’s American Olympic squad.
