Child bride, 12, dies after struggling to give birth

A 12-year-old Yemeni girl, who was forced into marriage, has died after struggling to give birth to a baby for three days.

Fawziya Abdullah Youssef died of severe bleeding on Friday while giving birth to a stillborn in Hodeida province, 140 miles west of the capital San’a.

Youssef was only 11 when her father married her to a 24-year-old man who works as a farmer in Saudi Arabia, Sky News reported.

Child marriages are widespread in Yemen and sometimes, poor parents give away their young daughters in exchange for large dowries.

Last year, the case of 8-year-old Nojoud Mohammad Ali, who had obtained a divorce, highlighted the situation of thousands of women and children forced into marriage.

Human rights organizations, including women’s movements, urged the parliament to enact a law that would prevent Yemeni men in taking child brides.
