China Jails Orgy-Organizing Professor

A Chinese computer science professor who was convicted for organizing a swingers club has vowed to fight on, saying that those who participated in the sex orgies he organized did so in their own free will. Ma Yaohai was sentenced to three and a half years in jail earlier this week after pleading not guilty to running a sex club.

The 53-year-old professor said that what he and his club members did was for their “own happiness.” He said that the people who joined his “swinging games knew they could stop at any time.” Up to 18 others were charged for joining the “swinging games,” which were held 14 times at Ma’s home last month. The group also held four other sessions at undisclosed locations. The members of the club were sentenced up to two and a half years. Some of the group’s members were taxi drivers, sales clerks, and office employees, local media reported.

Ma’s case has sparked debates in China about whether activities such as swinging should be regulated. Some sociologists believe such acts should not be punished as long as those involved are not disturbing any one. However, some conservatives see the actions of Ma’s group as a violation of the country’s “traditional customs and civilized ethics,” as posited by a local columnist.
