Conan O’Brien’s first ‘Tonight Show’ (video)

Conan O’Brien kicked off his new gig on The Tonight Show Monday evening with an extended video. The premise: He had forgotten to move to California on the night of his first performance. Unable to find a cab, he ended up running and swimming all the way from New York to Los Angles, only to find the stage door at Universal Studios locked.

The night was filled with numerous gags and guests including Pearl Jam and funnyman Will Ferrell, who was carried in by Egyptian throne bearers.

The voice introducing him was familiar: Andy Richter—the sidekick from his early days on Late Night—doing his best Ed McMahon impression behind a stage-adjacent podium.

“I have to admit I think I’ve timed this moment perfectly,” he said in his opening monologue. “I’m on a last-place network, I moved to a state that’s bankrupt and ‘The Tonight Show’ is sponsored by General Motors.”
