CONCACAF Gold Cup 2009: Costa Rica vs. El Salvador

The 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup begins tonight with a doubleheader at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, with Canada vs. Jamaica followed by Costa Rica vs. El Salvador.

Costa Rica is one of the tournament favorites. It is expected that coach Rodrigo Kenton give those players who missed the CONCACAF qualifiers a chance in tonight’s game; however, he won’t forget veteran defenders Harold Wallace and Leonardo Gonzales and midfielder Celso Borges.

El Salvador will debut at the tournament with its players fully motivated after having a great performance at the qualifiers, including a momentous victory against Mexico.

The game starts at 10:00 p.m. EDT.

UPDATE: Osael Romero scored twice, including the decisive goal in the 86th minute, to secure a 2-1 El Salvador victory against Costa Rica. El Salvador and Canada share first place with three points apiece after Canada defeated Jamaica 1-0.
