Bilbao’s Ugly Competition

Ugly Competition Spain

Daredevils being chased by a herd of enraged bulls, tossing goats, throwing tomatoes at each other, and taking turns jumping over infants are some of Spain’s weird traditions. But have you heard of “The Ugly Competition“?

Around the middle of August, the Basque city of Bilbao holds the annual Concurso de Feos, an equally bizarre contest which is part of a festival called Aste Nagusia (“Big Week”). During the event, participants are asked to make the ugliest faces they could and do their best to impress the judges with their hideous poses.

Here are some images that photographers have captured during the event (via WALL TO WATCH).

What’s fun about Aste Nagusia isn’t just the disturbing faces but that Bilbao offers a nine-day festival of live music, games, circuses, bullfights, fireworks, lots of drinking and late night parties.

So, who’s the ugliest of them all?
