Thousands of Filipinos at risk of losing jobs

MANILA, Philippines—Senator Edgardo Angara said on Wednesday that close to 60,000 Filipinos could lose their jobs abroad, mostly from the United States, due to the worldwide economic slump.
“If not handled correctly, the financial crisis we see today will become tomorrow’s human crisis,” Angara told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Angara said that 590,000 of the 5.1 million overseas Filipino workers (OFW) were “at risk of losing their jobs.”
These include 129,000 in the US under temporary working visas, particularly those in hotels, casinos as well as agricultural workers; 48,000 seafarers in cruise ships; …

New Harry Potter book to go on sale

The Tales of Beedle the Bard, a new book written and illustrated by J.K. Rowling, goes on sale Thursday. This new book by the British author is her unofficial send-off to the adventures of boy wizard Harry Potter.
This new Harry Potter spin-off is expected to become an international best-seller, with a global print run of around 7.5 million copies.
The book is based on a volume of five wizard fairy tales given by Albus Dumbledore, to Harry’s friend Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

New Xbox 360 Arcade has 256MB internal memory

Good news for everyone that is looking to pick up an Xbox 360. A Microsoft representative confirmed to Xbox360 Fanboy that latest Arcade units will contain 256MB of internal memory.

“We are constantly updating the console’s more than 1700 internal components. We can confirm that we are moving to internal memory for the Xbox 360 Arcade. The physical internal memory is the same size as the previous external memory units – 256MB.”

Thai Demonstrators Leave Airports

BANGKOK, Thailand–Anti-government demonstrators packed up and left Bangkok’s airports after their Prime Minister was forced from power by the country’s highest court.
The People’s Alliance for Democracy movement (PAD) officially handed back control of the airport Wednesday, after a crippling siege, as authorities assured angry tourists that flights would resume within 24 hours.
Protesters who during the last week caused two Thai airports to shut down, celebrated Somchai Wongsawat’s resignation, singing and waving the country’s red, white and blue flag as they promised to end their occupation of the facilities.

Sean Avery has always been known to be an annoying presence in the NHL. His attitude in the locker room is known to make teams want to get rid of him. But of all the spiteful comments and other antics he pulled on the way to becoming the biggest pest in hockey, never had he gone so far that the NHL suspended him–until Tuesday.

According to reports, Miley Cyrus would like to become a photographer and someday collaborate with Annie Leibovitz.
“She was amazing and so talented and her lighting … I would love to work with her again,” she told the Daily Record in a recent interview.

Cholera death toll in Zimbabwe hits 484

Zimbabwe’s cholera epidemic has killed nearly 500 people, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
As of Monday, the Ministry of Health in Zimbabwe has reported a total of 11, 735 cholera cases with 484 deaths since August 2008, affecting all provinces in the country. The overall case fatality rate is 4% but has reached up to 20–30% in remote areas.
