David Beckham to Miss World Cup

David Beckham has been denied a last chance to represent England in the World Cup after suffering a ruptured Achilles’ tendon in AC Milan’s Italian League win over Chievo Verona. Team doctor Jean Pierre Meersseman confirmed the bad news for England fans. “As far as the World Cup is concerned, he’s definitely out,” he said.

The injury is expected to sideline Beckham for at least five months, while the South Africa World Cup is due to take place in June. Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani revealed that England gaffer Fabio Capello immediately called after hearing of Beckham’s injury, which occurred only two minutes before the end of the match at San Siro.

Milan manager Leonardo said Beckham’s injury dampened the importance of the team’s victory, which enabled them to come within one point of Inter Milan for the League title. “Tonight was a very important win for us, but David’s injury definitely puts a downer on the evening,” he said.

Beckham, who was in near tears while he was being taken out of the field, is due to undergo surgery under world renowned specialist Dr. Sakari Orava of the Mehilainen Clinic in Turku. The 34-year-old Beckham has played in three World Cup teams and was looking at this year’s edition of the event as his swan song.
