DC United vs. Real Madrid

Spanish giants Real Madrid is scheduled to play against D.C. United in an exhibition game this afternoon at the FedEx Field in suburban Maryland.

It may just be an international friendly but plenty is at stake as the match is expected to draw over 70,000 spectators.

Los Blancos is considered one of the best teams in the world. It has won a record 31 Spanish titles and 9 European Cups. On Friday (August 7), the Spanish side cruised to a 5-1 victory over Toronto as they prepare for the kickoff of the 2009-2010 La Liga campaign on August 30.

For D.C., it presents a chance to showcase their team against world class opposition, and allows the United players a chance to go up against some of the biggest stars in the world of football. They could also use this game to make a statement that Americans have started to develop their own style of play.

Game time is 3:00 p.m. EST (9:00 p.m. CET).

UPDATE: Real Madrid beat D.C. United 3-0. Gonzalo Higuain scored twice in the second half as the visitors took control. Arjen Robben added another goal for the Spanish giants.
