Dear John Halts Avatar Dominance; Grabs Super Bowl Weekend Record
It took a romance film to halt the dominance of the new highest grossing film of all time. Avatar bowed down to Dear John.
The love story film took 32.4 million dollars while the blockbuster sci-fi-ecology epic took 23.6 million. The strategy taken in by the producers was to put out the film during the Super Bowl weekend, where American males would be watching leaving the American women flocking in to the movies. In fact, it is the now the highest grossing film during a Super Bowl weekend, eclipsing previous record holder Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds which was at 31.1 million dollars.
Despite the lost, Avatar still broke another record as it grabbed the lead in the box office records for eighth-weekend showing. But just a little though, Titanic was at 23.02 million dollars. It might have a hard time grabbing the ninth-weekend top spot as Titanic has a record of 28.1 million dollars. But since Avatar has a knack for grabbing records, it will be a weekend to lookout for.
Currently, Avatar is at 630 million dollars in US sales and 2.2 billion dollars worldwide.
Dear John starring Channing Tatum (Step Up, GI Joe) and Amanda Syefried (Mama Mia!) is about two lovers separated by war. They exchanged letters during their time apart. It is based from a novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks. This is the author’s sixth film to be made into a movie. The other films are Message in a Bottle, A Walk to Remember, The Notebook, Nights in Rodanthe and The Last Song (slated for release March 31)
