Democrats Receive Violent Threats

The FBI and Capitol Police have been called to advise Democratic lawmakers on how to protect themselves after reports came out that several Democrats who voted for the passage of the sweeping healthcare reform bill have received violent threats. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer did not explicitly say that those under threat would receive additional security detail, saying only that his allies are “getting attention from the proper authorities.”

In one incident, a Democratic Party headquarters in a country in Rochester, New York, was attacked with a brick, which had a note saying “extremism in defense of liberty is no vice.” In Virginia, Rep. Tom Perriello’s brother has received a threatening letter and had his propane line cut off.

Party leaders said at least eight more Democratic lawmakers have received violent threats before and after the historic Sunday vote, in which President Barack Obama’s allies passed the healthcare bill via a 219-212 vote. Obama signed the bill into law on Tuesday at the White House.
