Robert Zemeckis‘ 3D animated version of A Christmas Carol opened as the top film in U.S. and Canadian theaters this weekend with lower-than-expected ticket sales of $31 million.

The film, featuring the voice of Jim Carrey, knocked the King of Pop out of the No. 1 spot as Michael Jackson’s This Is It slipped to second place with $14 million.

The Men Who Stare at Goats—starring George Clooney and Ewan McGregor—earned $13.3 million in its opening weekend, while alien encounter flick The Fourth Kind made $12.5 million.

Disney’s A Christmas Carol is rated PG and has a running time of 96 minutes. Originally written by Charles Dickens in 1843, it tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, the misanthrope who is visited by four ghosts on Christmas Eve.
