Don Nelson Becomes Winningest NBA Coach

The Golden State Warriors are not going to the playoffs but they have just cemented Don Nelson‘s reputation as one of the best coaches in NBA history. The Warriors defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves, 116-107, in a battle of also-rans to make Nelson the NBA coach with the most wins, overtaking Lenny Wilkens atop the list.

Nelson now has 1,333 wins in 31 seasons. The Warriors showered Nelson with a combination of soft drinks and water, as the team did not bring any champagne to Minneapolis. Anthony Tolliver, who also set a career-best 34 points, said “we took some Sprite and some Mountain Dew and some water and sprayed it all over him.”

“This is probably why we end up coaching, for moments like this,” Nelson said as he collected another milestone in a coaching career that has brought him to four cities, including Milwaukee, New York, and Dallas. The three-time coach of the year, however, has yet to make it to the finals as a coach. He won five NBA titles as a player for the Boston Celtics.
